What Is Defeat the Creek?
Defeat the Creek is a 10.3 nautical mile, two-person paddle showdown through the winding, tide-twisting waters of Church Creek in West Ashley, Charleston, SC.
Teams launch at the end of Church Creek, grind 5.15 nautical miles to the Ashley River, slap the buoy like it owes them money, and then battle the tide all the way back. It's endurance. It's strategy. It's teamwork.
But Defeat the Creek isn't just a race — it's a full-blown, creekside fundraising spectacle. From the electric afterparty to the raffles, music, food, drinks, games, and limited-edition merch, this event brings together competitors, spectators, and the local community all in support of our Lowcountry Veterans.

The Foundation We Paddle For

At Lowcountry Veterans Home, our mission is to provide safe, stable, and supportive transitional housing for homeless United States military veterans in the Charleston area.
Through our partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs, we are able to serve approximately 60 veterans each year, offering a drug- and alcohol-free environment that fosters healing, stability, and growth.
In addition to lodging, we provide daily meals, transportation, and wrap-around support services, while also connecting veterans to educational opportunities, employment resources, and community volunteers. By the end of their stay, our goal is to help each veteran secure permanent housing and lasting stability.
100% of every tax-deductible donation directly supports our mission.

More Information
Race Participant Details
Defeat the Creek begins at the end of Church Creek, launching from the Hickory Hill neighborhood in West Ashley, Charleston, SC.
Each team must consist of two racers competing in a two-person kayak or canoe. Racers are strongly encouraged to bring their own vessel. If you need a kayak or canoe, please indicate that during registration — we are partnering with a local Charleston kayak rental company to provide limited rentals.
The course spans 10.3 nautical miles through the winding, unpredictable waters of Church Creek. All teams should expect to dismount their vessel at least once for a mandatory 15-meter portage. Depending on tides and water levels, additional dismounts may be required. This is part of the challenge.
Make no mistake — this will be one of the toughest events you take on in 2026. It's not supposed to be easy. That's why it's called Defeat the Creek.
Who Should Race?
Defeat the Creek is built for competitors who want a real challenge. This race is for experienced paddlers, endurance athletes, and teams who are comfortable navigating tidal creeks, changing water levels, mud flats, and unpredictable conditions.
Participants should:
- Be confident swimmers
- Be physically prepared for 10.3 nautical miles of paddling
- Be comfortable exiting and re-entering a kayak or canoe mid-race
- Be prepared for heat, fatigue, and variable tides
This course will test your endurance, your teamwork, and your mental toughness. If that excites you — you belong here.
Charleston Takes Care of Its Own
Defeat the Creek exists to challenge competitors — and to strengthen our community.
Your donation helps provide housing and support to veterans through the Lowcountry Veterans Home. Whether you race or not, you can still make a difference.
Past Events & Champions
Last year marked the inaugural Defeat the Creek — and Church Creek was on fire. Ten teams launched into the 10.3 nautical mile battle, but only six powered through to finish, earning every ounce of bragging rights the hard way. When the paddles were finally down, the celebration kicked off with more than 80 people at the afterparty, turning the shoreline into a full-blown creekside party. Most importantly, together we raised $2,500 for charity — proving that even a little chaos on the water can make a real impact.
